About the Lessons

Our shared purpose is your beginning and ongoing musical growth, exploration, and maturation, building on your introductory or established interests that led you to seek lessons. We'll develop your skill, knowledge, and expressiveness toward a sustainable engagement with the piano.

Getting Started

Adolescents 13 to 17

  • Step 1

We will review business policy, discuss the student's interests and my teaching approach, and answer any questions you have about lessons. We can meet in-person, online, or on the phone with one or both parents or guardians, ideally the student, and me. The meeting is free and typically meeting lasts 20 to 30 minutes.

  • Step 2

A free, 30-minute introductory lesson for the student in conjuction with the initial meeting, or separately.

  • Step 3

Sign the contract and set up a schedule for ongoing lessons.

Adults 18+

  • Step 1

A free, introductory meeting and sample lesson. We will review business policy, discuss your interests and my teaching approach, answer any questions you have about lessons, and spend time at the piano. The entire meeting/lesson lasts 45 minutes.

  • Step 2

Sign the contract and set up a schedule for ongoing lessons.

About the Teacher

I earned a BA in music, majoring in piano, from the University of Washington, having previously studied piano and music theory at the Oberlin Conservatory.

I have teaching experience with music of the major Western classical, jazz, and popular eras, as well as entertainment sources such as Bollywood cinema, and, broadly, soundtracks from games, movies, TV, and musical theater.

Music Theory is an area of teaching specialization, and students also have pursued improvisation, composition, arranging, ear training, and rhythm training.

In addition, I have significant experience performing on trumpet, including jazz and classical study at the Oberlin Conservatory. I have sung in numerous vocal groups, including The Esoterics and The Seattle Choral Company, as well as community musical theater productions.

The Aaron Malver Studio opened in 2004. Beyond piano teaching, I am Assistant Editor of Perspectives of New Music, the principal academic journal of contemporary music theory.
